It’s that time again.
I had a lot of fun casting both BLOOD SKIES and BLACK SCARS with popular Hollywood actors a while back, and I see no need not to continue that trend now. So sit back, relax, and enjoy my casting call for the third installment in the BLOOD SKIES series…
Warlock mercenary, leader of the pack, in over his head
War-weary and battered, reluctant but confident, Eric Cross is the central character in the series (though he shares a good half of the narrative in SOULRAZOR with Danica Black), and he acts as our eyes and ears into the post-apocalyptic world. Cross is good-hearted and true, brash and protective, lonely and haunted. And the more novels in the BLOOD SKIES series I write, the more convinced I am James McAvoy is the right choice to portray him.
Mercenary witch, Cross’ right-hand woman, former Revenger
Danica, a former prison Warden with a dark and troubled past, is second in command of Cross’ band of mercenaries, and in many ways she ‘s more suited to the role of being a leader than Eric is. Black is outspoken and brazen, has a commanding presence, and doesn’t take shit from anybody. Who else personifies that perfect blend of tough and sexy? No one does it like Milla Jovovich.
Former gladiator, fearless warrior, resident smart-ass
A former prisoner and criminal with a one-liner for everything, Kane, like Cross and Danica, bears more than his share of tragedy in his violent past, and in spite of his Devil-may-care attitude and cavalier demeanor is arguably the most reliable member of the team. Ryan Reynolds was this character even before I knew who Ryan Reynolds was.
One of the new members of the team in Book 3 is Ronan, a swordsman who seems to enjoy slicing, dicing and killing things a bit too much. Still, even with an unhealthy propensity to become a human Cuisanart, Ronan is a valuable member of the team. This was a tough one, but something about Michael Fassbender makes him fit the bill for Ronan: not very imposing but handsome, a little off-kilter, and kind of has that “dead man walking” look about him.
Another new member, Maur is a rather eccentric Gol who acts as the team’s “techie”, maintaining their equipment and ship while also piloting them to and from their various missions. He also has a tendency to refer to himself in the third person and get under everyone’s skin, and the latter quality (as well as his diminutive stature) had me thinking Peter Dinklage again. Purists will argue I already cast Peter as another Gol named Tega Ramsey in BLACK SCARS. I stick my tongue out at them, remind them most Gol all look identical, and cast him anyway.
Ash is the half-sister of Grissom and the team’s third mage, but while Cross and Black handle combat and tracking, Ash concerns herself with keeping the team healed. A quiet but firm presence, Ash is something of a mother figure to the group (she’s much older than she looks), and even though Zoe Saldana is known more for her spunky roles I think she physically resembles Ash almost to a tee. (Okay, so Ash is bald…aside from that…)
Big gun, big laugh, Ash’s brother
Grissom is a half-Doj warrior, and Ash’s half-brother. Big-hearted and quick to action, Grissom is the gun’s major muscle in tough situations. We’re big fans of Dwayne Johnson in my house, and “The Rock’s” tough-guy persona combined with the softer side he sometimes shows in his films make him a natural choice for the half-giant.
Korva is a former ally of Danica’s and the main antagonist in SOULRAZOR, and her single-minded determination to recover a cursed magical blade has her scouring the wastelands and killing anyone who gets in her way. Charlize Theron has proved in a number of roles that she has a nasty side, and I think she’d fill Korva with just the right amount of menace.
Jennar, a villainous character from BLACK SCARS who makes a return appearance in SOULRAZOR, is described as tall, lean, and a bit…odd. Topher Grace, a wonderfully odd-ball character actor, reprises his non-speaking role from the previous book, because I just think the guy has a knack for looking creepy.
Joss Whedon, get your butt on over here. If you’re not available, I’m calling Ridley Scott.
