Welcome to Six-Sentence Sunday!
I so much enjoyed highlighting Book 1 of the Blood Skies series last week that I thought I’d revisit the past again. This time we’ll visit BLACK SCARS, Book 2 in the series.
In this segment, our hero, young warlock Eric Cross, has been captured by the vampires of the city-state of Krul. After spending a bit of time in the vampire’s prison, Cross is informed by a fellow captive, Danica Black, that they and another prisoner named Kane are going to be forced to compete in the vampire’s gladiator games. Cross is injured at this point, and so he must be prepared for this torturous event…
Cross drifted in and out of consciousness, and in and out of pain. He saw milk-colored chambers of icy steel and iron machines that churned steam and cemetery smoke.
They strapped him to a cold table. His skin was treated with pungent oils and powders that looked and smelled of grave dust. He was forced into a vat of crimson brine and black nutrients that soaked into his skin, and he was left to float weightless, somehow not drowning, like a fly trapped in honey.
Cross felt little of it: he could tell what was happening, but none of it seemed real.
Thanks for stopping by! Be sure to head on over to Six Sunday and check out the other participating authors!

Every bit as vivid as the rest of your writing, wonderful! However, being half-way through Blood Skies right now I think I might have to avoid coming here for a while – spoilers, y’know! So please don’t take any offence if I’m not about for a few weeks, in fact, take it as a compliment.
Thanks, Karen! I totally understand. I *do* try to keep my Six Sunday excerpt as spoiler-free as possible, but sometimes it just doesn’t work out that way. ;D Thanks for stopping by!
Egads, you manage to creep me out every time. It’s so horrific that they’re healing him just so they can watch him kill or be killed. So monstrous.
That’s vampires for you. ;D Thanks, Monica!
Beautiful scene, such poetic prose.
@LibertysYarn Thank you, Babe! =D
Just as well it doesn’t seem real, it sounds horrifying! Terrific six.
It actually gets worse. ;D Thanks, Elin!
Your series sounds like fun. Thanks for the follow on Twitter @CinemaProfound . I’ll keep an eye for your tweets
Thanks, Sidney!
wow, you draw the reader into a vivid scene!!
Thanks, Maryellen, I sure try!
The healing-before-breaking scene
I like it!
Absolutely. Things get much worse for him after that. ;D Thanks, Wendy!
Fantastic! Poor Eric. I loved his character in the first book–and it seems he only gets better. . You do an amazing job, Steven, of painting a scene, and damn! You paint in dark colors. Great six!
Thank you so much, Teresa!
How torturous. The description of the process is terrifying. What would such a thing do to the mind? You must have the most fun getting in this guy’s head ’cause it is fun to read.
It leaves it share of scars on him, I assure you. Like I mentioned above, this excerpt is just the tip of the iceberg — it gets much worse.
I love being in Eric’s head. I’m sure he’s sick of me being there. ;D
I like how descriptive this scene is but it still has the out of focus feeling of someone who is fading in and out of conscious. That’s cool how you found that balance.
Thank you very much, Sarah!
Wonder what those vampires will do to him? Good description of the overall scenery.
